Welcome to Mount Pleasant

Cresting along soft rolling hills, Mount Pleasant is a welcoming town located in the center of New York’s Westchester County. Thirty miles north of the bustling metropolis of New York City, Mount Pleasant is a charming combination of hamlets and incorporated villages, which includes the areas of Pleasantville, Sleepy Hollow, Thornwood, Valhalla, Pocantico Hills, and a portion of Briarcliff Manor.

Briarcliff Manor and surrounding areas have evidence of some human settlement tracing back as far as the archaic period, and though Mount Pleasant was incorporated in 1788, it didn’t blossom into the community it is today until a population surge during the Industrial Revolution. Home to the Rockefeller estate holdings, as well as several historical sites, Mount Pleasant is rich in heritage and harbors a relaxed atmosphere.

Now, the town is largely residential and has a wide variety of housing options. In Mount Pleasant, you’ll find classic cottages and Tudor-style homes that look plucked from a fairy tale, sweeping Colonials with pools and outdoor gardens, affordably-priced single-family houses nested in small communities, apartments, and condos.

What to Love

People & Lifestyle

Since Mount Pleasant remains a fairly residential area, it’s perfectly suited for those looking to commute to NYC for work while maintaining a charming, small-town vibe in their home life. Its population is predominately made up of families and its lowkey vibe means that anyone looking for peace and serenity will find contentment here.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

In Mount Pleasant, you’re certain to find local favorites that will become staples in your day-to-day life. Elevate your grocery shopping experience at A&S Fine Foods, a delicatessen that not only boasts homemade sausages but also serves a wide variety of delicious prepared foods and even specializes in full-service catering. Mount Pleasant also offers plenty of sit-down restaurant options with menus to die for, like Risotto Italian Restaurant and Bar, an upscale eatery that has perfected Italian classics like their wonderful cacio pepe and lamb bolognese.

For the perfect appliance to store your meals or cook those incredible homemade meats from A&S, head to Berger Appliance. A family-owned store established in 1952, Berger carries all of the top brands like KitchenAid, GE, Whirlpool, and more. Whatever your appliance needs are, this friendly store with expert staff assistance is the place to go.

Is fitness your passion? Mount Pleasant has you covered there, too. The Partners Gym has classes and group fitness activities for every level of athleticism, with an emphasis on building long-lasting results and healthy habits. Their programs recommend 12 training days per month to receive full benefits. Rebel Yoga is the place to go for excellence in yoga. Their classes include hot and non-hot as well as flows for every need: the classic rebel flow, vinyasa, recovery, and several others.

Things to Do

The wooded hills of Mount Pleasant have an abundance of outdoor recreation areas that serve as a backdrop for several beautiful sites you’ll want to make sure to visit. At the Kensico Dam (also referred to as the Valhalla Dam), the 307ft tall and 1,843ft long structure encapsulating the Kensico Reservoir makes for an uncommon and scenic setting for family-friendly activities like biking, in-line skating, walking, and picnics.

On the 12-acre facility of Mount Pleasant Community Center, you’ll find a public pool, a playground, programs for senior citizens, and opportunities to join local athletic leagues. Families can visit the James M. Carroll Park to take a stroll along the Leith Pond and enjoy the open-air greenery of this small local spot.

Film enthusiasts will love the dedication to the arts presented by the Jacob Burns Film Center, a five-screen cinema and education center that—in addition, to screening over 400 films a year—hosts a wide variety of events that range from interviews with filmmakers to chef-curated receptions.
